Nail wear

Would unwound strings be less inclined to cause nail wear on index finger when strumming? Seems like it would, but being a newbie, I get to ask these sorts of questions. Thanks.......

Yes, unwound strings are generally less abrasive. Some wound strings are worse than others, too (La Bella is "flat wound").

Don't know if this works for everyone, but my fingernails seem to have gotten a lot stronger since I started filing them instead of clipping them.

Switched to Worth Browns........no more nail wear on index finger! Yay!
