Hi all you lovely people! Joining the uke fam all the way from Hong Kong. After an unhealthy amount of binging of videos and materials, I was convinced the Concert sized Ukulele was the better size for me. I hope to just do more than strum and do some fingerpicking, but I wasn't confident on the large tenor as I have very short fingers. (I can't even span an octave on a piano). I borrowed a friend's Concert Kala laminate ukulele and strummed around for two weeks before committing and buying a Concert sized Uma Uk-30SCEVO (what a mouthful!). I wanted to buy something nicer that I can keep for a long time and not see it as a disposable first instrument.

But listening and watching more pros, it seems they predominantly on a Tenor and it seems the really high quality ukes are all this size as well. Now getting some buyer's regret. =( Perhaps this idea of a one forever uke collection might be a bit a silly and I'll end up purchasing another size just to try. I'll wait till I get good enough to see if it is indeed a problem!

Anyhows, hoping to connect with all of you in the future!

Welcome to UU, SeemingMusic!

Pick the size you feel most comfortable holding and playing. Listen to your body, it will send out signals to take breaks. Once you've given your muscles, tendons etc time to get stronger and more flexible, you will find that you can play for longer periods of time, and that certain stretches are easier. That would be a good moment for trying out a tenor (or maybe go soprano instead).

Thanks! Great advice and I'll definitely do that in the future. Just overloaded with so much information as a beginner. I do love my uke though so much. I've sat there holding it for a while just staring at it. It's very bizarre.

Welcome to the UU Forum Seeming Music. Glad to have you with us all the way from Hong Kong.

Yes, it's quite easy to get overloaded with information when you are just starting out.

Some excellent resources to help you get started are:

Brad Bordessa has some very good free introductory stuff for new players: https://liveukulele.com/lessons/uke-101/
Brett McQueen also has a number of free lessons and info: https://ukuleletricks.com/how-to-play-ukulele/
Member Choirguy also has a good free information resource: http://ukestuff.info
Barry Maz offers new player tips, info and suggestions. And more at his site: https://www.gotaukulele.com/p/beginnersguides

Welcome to UU! Lovely new uke! As a beginner, I hear you, there's a lot of information to figure out. Don't worry, if you decide you would prefer a different size or style of ukulele in time, that's not a bad thing. Enjoy!
