I was joking... but what if? The problem is mostly on the C string between D# and F I have a low G so D# on G is 8th fret. The low G rings great up to... 8th fret. Is it possible that the wood is just muddy at a certain frequency? I think I need professional help. I'll start with a luthier...

I don't see how the nut could be the problem. It has great sustain with open strings. The problem only occurs when fretting 3rd to 5th fret. Is a tiny amount of camber to the neck a fatal flaw? I can't see it with a straight edge.

Thanks both. Already tried with two shims. I think it would have to be raised a lot to correct the issue- to get 0.25 mm (0.01 inch) more clearance at the 6th fret while fretting the 4th would require raising the saddle 2.5 mm (0.1 inch) That's not to say the saddle isn't a possible problem...
