At one point I had the opportunity to collect a possibly turn of the 20th century 12" planer from my father that my grandfather had owned. So it was a bit smaller but it also had exposed belts and gears. After thinking about it for a long time, I let it go and it was given away to someone else. What sealed it for me was that if you had plenty of space, you could pretty much avoid the hazards by walking around well away from the machine. But that wouldn't have been possible in my cramped shop space. In this example, they probably could have set it up with more space around it, and they could also fabricate guards to cover most of the exposed belts.
