    Tiny Tim & Bob Dylan

ukukeguy said; "Also it's not uncommon for photographer's assistants/printers to flip negatives ...." See the cover of Dylan's debut album for an example of this, in this case it was probably the design dept making a more pleasing composition. Vintage

Is "cowboy chords" a derogatory term?

Seems to be used more by guitar players, referring to basic 1st position chord playing where a Sus4 might seem a bit exotic! And, yes when I've the term, it tends to be used in a condescending manner. Vintage

    Playing On a Train

Local medical centres have started an initiative to encourage the elderly to get out and about and socialize called Train and Chat. It involves a rail trip to a town about 45 mins away, a couple of hours in the town then back home by train again. They asked our Uke group, D'Ukes of Gransha...

How do you organize your loose sheet music?

I use an Android app, OpenSongApp. This will scroll for a preset duration or linked to audio, I can also over-ride this with up or down arrows at top & bottom of the screen. I think most apps work in a similar fashion. Vintage

    Fishing line spools for strings

Can't help with bulk string info, but I teach a group of senior adults and it's not just kids that are dumb. Vintage

New Uke Day (NUD) NUD: Enya Nova U Soprano 21"

I bought the Enya concert around October 2019 and played it quite frequently, but by January 2020 I began to notice fret wear. I made inquiries here and on other sites, but it seemed at the time I was the only person on the planet with such a problem. In the following four years I have probably...

Song Dex Twin Key Ukulele Chart

Check it for accuracy before you spend too much time reproducing this. D#Maj7 and FMaj7 both look a bit off. Vintage

    Adding a Tailpiece

Unless you are into DIY you may have difficulty finding components of the correct size. I suspect most parts of that size will be designed for Mandolins, the floating bridge shaped at the base for archtop, tailpiece only suitable for loop-end metal strings. Vintage

    Applause ukuleles

Interesting. The marquetry/pick-up story came from my local retailer when he was ordering it in for me, maybe the UK distributor only imported those formats. I'm surprised at difference in manufacturing specs between models.

    Applause ukuleles

Bought a soprano version around 2005/6, around 110/120 UK pounds, came with a decent gig-bag with the Applause logo. At that time, choice was limited so I went for Ovation/Applause as a reliable name. It looked like a quality piece of kit. As stated above, they seemed to be only available in...

Feeling an itch - a concert resonator?

I use a piece of gripper material for rugs on wood or laminate floors on the backs of all my ukes. I mainly play Sops or Concert so don't feel the need for straps, but this helps by giving a bit of grip to my shirt.

Feeling an itch - a concert resonator?

You are correct, you don't need to remove the coverplate/bridge protector to change strings, they are welded together. Recording King have solved the string abrasion issue by gluing a thin strip of slotted wood beneath the cover plate string holes. The strip is about 60mm x 15mm and about 1.5mm...

Feeling an itch - a concert resonator?

You're right about the weight comparison, a quick check on kitchen scales; wooden concert=730 gms, Recording King=1245 gms. That translates to 25.75 and 43.9 ounces in old money. Just completed the reassembly and stringing, the tuners fit properly now and the thinner neck feels better. Another...

Feeling an itch - a concert resonator?

I bought a Recording King a few months ago and when researching the market my perception was that some within the same price range were basically the same instrument with different names / hardware etc. With immaculate timing a retailer dropped about 50 pounds off the price, so that aided my...

    The Case Thread

My take on the DIY case. Made this a few years ago from 3.5mm MDF. The padding is cut from a yoga mat. I found the old luggage labels on the interweb and printed them at a size in proportion to the case, then stuck them on before the final varnish. I had previously made one from 3.5mm ply for a...

Do you have any insights on building a StewMac Uke?

I built a pair of these about 15 years ago and still use them today. Mine ended up a bit asymmetrical on the lower bout, so I had to offset the bridge by about 3 to 5 mm to keep the strings aligned. I would recommend adding additional controls to their suggested mould in this area to help...

    Performing Wireless

I have Xvive and Lekato systems, both used on acoustic guitars, banjos, ukes and mandolins. I have had the Xvive for about 6 years and when I bought it there was a warning about possible incompatibility with active pre-amp systems. On passive pick-ups like K&K discs, no problem. On some active...

Banjolele and a 4 string banjo?

Google is your friend! Search for Tenor Banjo and Plectrum Banjo, both 4 string varieties. Tenors are tuned in fifths C, G, D, A, usually around 22 inch scale, used extensively in the rhythm section of early Jazz. A variant of this is the "Irish" version tuned G, D, A, E, usually around 20 inch...

Advice needed for amplifying a resonator uke.

Thanks to all who replied. The comments re K&K reminded me that I had an unused K&K twin spot in my Bits & Pieces box. I rigged it up with sticky tape and Blue Tack on the biscuit as recommended for the K&K Pure Resonator B and am happy with the result. Will leave this temporary set up for a...
