The lower end of the market.

There is lower tier and then there is dirt CHEAP, which can be junk and unplayable. Don't waste your money on those unless you have a masochistic side and want to punish yourself. About a year ago I purchased a Kala Shark, a Flight Travel and an Enya Nova, all sopranos. They were all playable...

Your better and wilfully retained mass manufactured Sopranos

Ok to pile on this UAS inducing thought the Kala SSLING is the ukelele I was going to list. I have owned it for probably 6 years, bought it used and it always impresses me when I play it. I'm not a soprano guy and I prefer low G but this reentrant little guy scratches that itch.

    The Got Aways

I sold a Collings tenor in a beautiful sunburst. Not having a crystal ball I didn't know Bill Collings would pass away and they would basically stop making ukuleles. About 5 - 6 years ago I had the opportunity to have Chuck Moore build me a custom. The Cities policy had just been introduced...

    Ukuleles, Arthritis and Yours Truly

This is exactly what I was going to recommend. Being a long time stringed instrument player you know that the sound will change with a change of strings. But string experimentation is a cheap way to findout what works for you. Best of luck

    Strings. Happy in between

Thanks for sharing the string suggestions. I use Ernie Ball 12-54 a lot but never knew about the 12.5 -56 sets. The Martin 12.5 - 55 set seems to look about perfect, I do like thicker trebles on some guitars for a warmer, fatter tone. John Pearse have two sets that I like, Bluegrass 12 - 56 and...

New Uke Day (NUD) NUD!!!! Pono Spruce Top Mahogany Tenor ProClassic

Chuck Moore of Moore Bettah ukulele fame has recommended to "play a new instrument long, loud and hard and you'll hear a real difference in the first month". People can argue if or if not stringed instruments open up but every luthier I have talked to says well made all solid wood instruments do...

    Baritone Uke Sizes - HELP!

I played a little guitar before coming to ukulele. Like you the tenor was my preferred ukulele size but eventually made my way to baritone. I have been happy with the standard size baritone for the most part, with a few wrinkles. Cheap baritones can sound dull and muddy coming from steel string...

    Super-sized Baritone?

The Pono ULN4 is a wonderful instrument. It's smaller then the NUI, which is basically a tenor guitar, it's the same size. The ULN4 comes in a number of different wood combos, comes in nylon as well as steel string. I had a steel string version and they a high quality I strument, like all Ponos

Learning the ukulele when you don't like most music written for it?

Wow what an eye opening thread, great contributions by the members here. You said you wanted to keep it simple and a baritone uke with its linear tuning could get you there. Baritones eliminate the percussive plinky sound you associate "ukulele music" with. Although the electric ukes seem like...

Ukulele and microphones which work best for recording

This is a good topic to initiate. There is a large group of talented people here that I am sure have a lot of experience doing high quality recordings. Unfortunately I am not one of them, although I do own 3 good microphones they are for live performances. I look forward to learning from this thread

Q: Experience/sound sample for Kimo Ukulele 'big baritone'?

I bought a used Kimo tenor about 5 years ago, liked it so much I commissioned a super concert. I know that doesn't answer your baritone question but Hank is great to work with. Tell him the tone you prefer, warm or bright, big sustain or more percussive. He will guide you in the selection of the...

How many ukuleles do you have?

10+ seems to be popular at the moment. I'm in that group with the smallest number of ukes I've owned in years. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing🤣

Journey Instruments OF660 travel guitar UPDATE!!!!!

The UPDATE is I sold it. Two main reasons, playability and volume. The neck shape is a D with a flat area at the back. I just could not get along with it, was my most difficult to fret guitar. I tried everything from lowering the action just short of buzzing to extra light strings. The other...

    WHEW!!!!

I have always weighed the wait against how long I plan to own and enjoy playing it. Kinda like have a kitchen renovation done, it might take more then 4 weeks but I'll love it for decades to come. My first custom ukulele took over one year to finally make it into my hands. That was 9 years ago...
