Why a Pineapple- and why so much?

I love the pineapple ukes, in fact they should be in their own category of instrument altogether. Piñalele, or just piña.

The double-bout 'mini-guitar' looks comes from Nunes who brought it from Portugal. Kamaka apprenticed under Nunes and then invented the pineapple, making it a 'true' Hawiian uke . You can draw a very large circle on the top, centered on the bridge. This design really amps up the 'monopole' vibration mode of the top. That's a glaring trait of my Vita. Big bark.
Kamaka is the oldest ukulele company, continuously family run. I think they are only one of two Hawaiian companies that make their own ukes. If it's a new Kamaka, it was handmade in Hawaii, no guessing. If it's old, then small chance it was made in Japan.

So, handmade in Hawaii by the company still run by the family of the guy who invented it, made from super-expensive wood aged for years before use. Expensive? Some shoes made by slave labor cost more.
